Olympic Handball Introduction

Handball is a combination of Basketball, Soccer and Netball. It is played indoors on a court about the size of two basketball courts. At the each end of the court is a net which is 9 feet wide by 6 1/2 feet high. The objective of the game is simply to score more goals than the other team.

The ball is generally moved around the court by passing to each other. However, the ball can be bounce, but like in basketball you cannot double- bounce. You can bounce for as long as you want .You can only take at most three steps after catching a pass. You cannot keep the ball for more than three seconds without passing it. If a player is fouled he is allowed a free zone 9 feet wide to restart play. Each team has 12 members, two of which are goalkeepers. 7 team members’ play and substitutions can be made at any time. There is a halfway line on the court. There is also a safety area that extends about 20 feet around the goal. A player is not allowed to be in this area. Shooters may leap into this area if they shoot before they land.

If there is a penalty a player is warned. The next two penalties are two-minute suspensions. After that players can be ineligible (which means they are detached, but can be replaced after two minutes). They can also be excluded, which means they cannot be replaced and the team will have one less player on the court.
Each goal counts as 1 point. Usually 20 goals are scored in a game. The games consists of two 30 minute halves with a 10 minute rest period in between the halves. The handball weighs 16 ounces (13 ounces for women) and is about the size of a cantaloupe.

The handball game of today was shaped by the end of the 19th century in northern Europe, mainly Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The first written set of team handball rules was published in 1906 by the Danish gym teacher. The modern set of rules was available on 29 October 1917 by Max Heiser, Karl Schelenz, and Erich Konigh from Germany. After 1919 these rules were improved by Karl Schelenz. The first international games were played under these rules, between Germany and Belgium for men in 1925 and between Germany and Austria for women in 1930. Therefore modern handball is generally seen as a game of German origins.

Men's field handball was played at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Women's team handball was added at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Olympic Fencing Introduction

Fencing is a simple, exciting sport; fun and cheap to start and maintain both your body and brain active! With 3 different weapons and a range of fun behavior using foam and plastic swords, there is something for everyone and every age. For a bit of an introduction to the sport of Fencing, the three weapon used in sport of fencing are Foil, épée and sabre in the. While it is not extraordinary for fencers to battle in all three events, they commonly choose to build up their skills in one weapon. Until recently, women were permitted to struggle only in foil, but now the USFA & FIE offer national competitions for women in épée and sabre. The main objective of a fencing bout is to successfully score 15 points (in direct elimination play) or five points (in preliminary pool play) on your opponent before he scores that number on you. Each time a fencer scores a touch, he/she receives a point. Direct elimination matches consist of three three-minute periods.

One of the most complicated tasks to visualize in foil and sabre fencing is the rule of right-of-way. This rule was established to eliminate actually immediate attacks by two fencers. In concentrate, right-of-way is the separation of offense and defense, made by the referee. The difference is important only when both the red and green lights go on at the same time in foil and sabre. When this happens, the winner of the point is the one who the referee determined was on offense at the time the lights went on. Épée does not use the right-of-way in keeping with its dueling origin - he who first gains the touch earns the point. Or, if both fencers hit within 1/25th of a second of each other, both earn a point. However, it is equally key to have a sound defense for épée, since the entire body must be protected from a touch.

Europeans brought fencing to the New World, of course. The activity became slightly more normal at the end of the Civil War as some colleges started fencing programs. The Amateur Athletic Union began investment national championships in 1888; however, many fencers wanted independence from the AAU and created the Amateur Fencers League of America in 1891. That organization was renamed the US Fencing Association in 1981.

Fencing is a regular part of Olympic Games since 1896. It is one of just four sports to have been part of every Summer Games since then. Men's foil and saber were part of the first Games; epee was added in 1900. Women competed in Olympic fencing for the first time in 1924.Women's épée was added to the World Championships in 1989 and was held for the first time at the Olympic Games in 1996.

London 2012 Olympic will see Fencing being contested in ExCeL from Saturday, 28 July to Sunday 5 August 2012. Fencing fans can get their Olympic Fencing Tickets from Global Ticket Market. Diego Armando Maradona, born in Lanús Argentina but raised in Villa Fiorito, a shantytown on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires. He's talent was soon spotted by Argentinos Juniors where he started playing at age 10. He made his entrance for the first team at age 15. He played 5 years for Argentinos after he went to Boca Juniors in 1981. In his first full season with Boca he already won the Primera División, he's moving dribbles and goals had not been ignored.

Maradona earned a transmit to European top club FC Barcelona were he would stay 2 seasons and score 38 goals in 58 matches. His last match for Barcelona was in the final of the Copa del Rey in 1984 against Athletic Bilbao. Maradona had just been recovered from an injury caused by a terrible tackle by one of Biblao's players. In the final Maradona gets tackled again, this time he gets angry and kicks a Bilbao player causing a fight to start. Barcelona losses the match with 1-0 and Maradona leaves Camp Nou, signing a contract with Napoli. It is at Napoli where he will have the best period of his career, winning Napoli's first Italian Championship in 1987 and repeating it in 1990. In 1989 Napoli wins the UEFA Cup by beating VfB Stuttgart in the final with 2-1, Maradona scoring one of the goals.

However the most brilliant part of his career was at the 1986 FIFA World Cup where he wins the tournament with Argentina. The most famous match of the tournament being the quarterfinal against England (2-1). It is in this match where Maradona scores twice, the first goal being a handball of which he would later say it was "The hand of god". His second after an amazing dribble in which he passes 5 England defenders and goalkeeper Shilton. Maradona would later say in one of his interviews "In that game no one could have stopped me, not even Mike Tyson". Maradona continued to play well that contest by scoring two amazing goals against Belgium (2-0) in the semifinals and winning the final against West Germany with 3-2. Maradona had a great influence in the Argentinian victory by scoring 5 goals and making 5 assists. He won the Golden Ball for best player of the tournament.

After that match Maradona was sent home for failing a drug test. In 1995 Maradona returned to Boca Juniors for the last 2 years of his career.
